70 Ex-Offenders Bussed To Polling Place To Vote
NC Law Allows Felons To Vote Upon Completion Of Sentence

About 70 former convicts have been taken to a voting site at Winston-Salem State University by the Darryl Hunt Project for Freedom and the Winston-Salem Black Political Action Committee.

The effort was spearheaded by Darryl Hunt, who served 18 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit.
"It's time for a change, so their voices need to be heard," Hunt said. "I felt good when I first voted and we talked to them and they feel good about being able to go vote."

Hunt said the biggest obstacle in getting ex-offenders to the polls is ignorance. He said many believe their right to vote cannot be restored.

But in North Carolina, felons regain the right after completing their sentence as long as they aren't on parole of probation.
